Internet E-Mail is extremely easy to use and mail is usually delivered within minutes whether it is to your children away at school, your co-workers abroad or the company across the street. USENET News is the name given to the news conferenceing system on the Internet. People can post and read messages on specific topics through newsgroups. Topics range from bungee jumping, to politics, to the latest craze in multi-media. For example, if you are planning a trip to London and you want to find a place to stay that is off the beaten path, you might want to post a message in the rec.travel newsgroup to get some answers. Currently there are over 80MB of messages transferred daily in over 7,000 unique newsgroups on USENET. From HoloNet's Main Menu select [N] for News. HoloNet offers three different news readers: TIN, RN, and NN. HoloNet defaults to TIN a simple and easy to use newsreader.
Telnet and FTP With Telnet, users can remotely log in to other computers on the Internet and use that computer's services. FTP (File Transfer Protocol) allows users to download files on the Internet to their local computer. For example, using FTP users can get the latest versions of many software packages in just minutes or through Telnet users can connect to libraries all over the world easily and efficiently. In order to use FTP and Telnet you will need to have the address of the computer you are trying to access. To access FTP and Telnet from HoloNet's Main Menu, select [I] for Internet Services.
Internet Relay Chat (IRC) With IRC users can chat in real time with other people on the Internet. Users type their message online so others can read the message on their screen in real time. IRC is also available by selecting [I] for Internet Services from HoloNet's Main Menu.
Eudora Support HoloNet supports Eudora, an off-line reader that allows Macintosh and PC users to read and write their E-Mail off-line. Eudora is fast and simple to use. A shareware version of Eudora for the Mac is available from our local archives found in the [F] File Browser section of the Main Menu. A PC version is available for purchase through Qualcomm 1-.
Archie, Gopher & WWW Archie allows users to find public files on Internet FTP sites. Gopher is a menu driven system that allows users to search for information by title and then download that information to their computer. WWW (World Wide Web) also allows users to find information that is located on the Internet. It is based on hypertext, which allows the system to be more powerful and easier to use. As more documents are moved to a hypertext format, WWW will become the standard searching tool for the Internet. Archie, Gopher and WWW are also available by selecting [I] for Internet Services from HoloNet's Main Menu.
Personal Domain Name Service Personal DNS is available for those individuals who would like a custom domain name with their HoloNet service. The one time setup fee for a Personal DNS is $25.00. Additional users can be added to a domain name for a fee of $25.00 per user. If you add more than ten users at one time to your personal domain name we will add everybody for a flat fee of $250.00. For example, if you were your own one person company a personal domain name could give your company more corporate identity. As your company grows you can add new employees to your domain name.
